Artist Statement
My work explores dichotomies between the complex structures of human creation and emotion, circumstance. These considerations manifest in layered or juxtaposed imagery, referencing both our created domestic life and the natural world, while alluding to the intangible. The resulting works communicate ideas of causality, change, loss and their resulting effects on the human psyche.
While my works build from the narrative, I believe the first visual impression is paramount to experiencing what lies beyond the surface. I rely on my intuition when selecting materials and discerning my ideas, and utilize recognizable objects and symbols, in hopes for lucid associations. Clay, wood, metal, concrete and fabrics are often combined with visceral materials such as tar, soil, wax, salt, and fibers. The works’ aesthetic communicates beauty through entropy, and resonates with memory and foreboding.
